Get ready to jump right in with this year’s Birdman event!
As many daredevil competitors ready themselves to fly off to the horizon – albeit very briefly – it can only mean one thing… It is time for Ilfracombe Round Table’s South West Birdman contest!
This enormous event has grown year on year, and sees crazy participants take a running jump off Ilfracombe Pier in the hope that they will fly the farthest and be crowned champion in front of thousands of spectators.
It’s certainly not for the faint-hearted.
The annual South West Birdman event transforms the peaceful seaside town of Ilfracombe to the place to be in the South West on the 5th August. After launching more than 20 years ago, this year the Tablers are looking to make this year the biggest yet.
“We like to do things a bit differently,” says Leo, a long-serving member of Ilfracombe Round Table.
Previous crowd-pleasing birdmen (and women) have included a team of Peppa Pigs, a ballerina, and a parachuting soldier, with last year seeing Buzz Lightyear crowned the best flight winner.
Ilfracombe Tabler, Paul Wright, says it’s all about having fun for a good cause. “Birdman started off as a jumping competition but has grown year on year. 2016 saw a great variety of flying machines and fancy-dress entries – and the amount of people who turned up to watch was spectacular. It was probably one of the biggest crowds we have ever had. It’s a cracking day and this year we want it to be even bigger!”
The ‘flying’ usually lasts about an hour and half, depending on the enthusiasm and speed of the competitors. As well as the main Birdman event, the pier is packed throughout the day with an ale and cider festival, live music stage, circus entertainment, barbecue, craft stalls and bouncy castles.
The event is free to watch and proceeds from the events activities and stands are distributed to charities and local worthy causes by Ilfracombe Round Table. So, get yourself to the west coast this summer for a burger or a go on the bouncy castle and help support some amazing causes too!
