Round Table members from around the globe flocked to Hampshire on the 11th March to celebrate 90 years of Round Table in true Table style, with two enormous events.
In 1927 there was a young man who created a vision, who has inspired hundreds of thousands of men around the globe. That man, the founding member of Round Table, Louis Marchesi, created an association that supported young businessmen in Norwich, that started millions of friendships around the world and broadened horizons. Ninety years later the National Association of Round Table Great Britain and Ireland is the largest voluntary association for young men in the British Isles.
For 90 years Round Table has been doing more for communities and members, reaching more than 2 million people a year and raising in excess of £4 million in Great Britain and Ireland. Successive years of bringing communities together, of creating smiles through Round Table various events, by raising much needed funds that go right back to those communities - the benefit to members and communities continues to grow and is underlined by the amazing milestone of 90 years of Round Table.
To kick off the 90th year, celebrations took part across two incredible events; a formal daytime event in Winchester, the home of the iconic Round Table Roundel, as well as one of the largest Firework displays in the UK organised by Round Table, followed by a party in the evening at Southampton’s O2.
The daytime event, exclusively for Table members past and present, saw friends from India, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, the Nordic States, and from all across Europe come together under the Round Table Roundel in Winchester Great Hall.
At the Winchester Guildhall, Table members were joined by guest speaker Paralympian and Invictus Games captain Dave Henson MBE, as well as the chance to hear from just a fraction of those who have been directly supported by the amazing work of Round Tables.
In the evening, the celebrations continued at the 02 Guildhall for the ultimate 90’s house party featuring superstar DJ Dave Pearce on the decks. With great music and a few drinks, Tablers were also joined by members of Ladies Circle, who this year celebrate 80 years of fun, friendship and fundraising.
Current Round Table National President, Mark House, said: “We saw an incredible 1200 people attend the two celebration events. The day time fun under the Round Table Roundel was immense, the lunch and speeches from Dave Henson were an inspiration to all, and just watching friendships being rekindled or new ones being made was just amazing. To see 250 friends travel from around the globe to join in was just awesome.
The evening event was on a whole other level and blew my mind – to see so many members and friends in one room having the times of their lives celebrating our 90th will give me goose bumps for ever. It is something to live long in our memories.
Any RTBI President is proud of what his members achieve, but events celebrating our 90th on Saturday saw my pride reach new levels. A particular huge thank you to the guys at Winchester Round Table who helped ensure the whole day was an amazing success. Thanks to all that did, to all that came, and thanks to Louis Marchesi for starting something that has been an inspiration and a great support to millions around the world.”
